Inevitably, with the experience of Covid and lock down, many of us turned towards our homes to provide that much needed respite and sanctuary from all that was going on around us. Post Covid, there is still a desire to retreat to a safe place to relax and unwind in.
This blog shows you 7 steps to create your perfect sanctuary at home. So, no matter how busy or hectic your life is right now, you can find peace and tranquillity when you need it most.
It is well documented that when we connect to nature, we feel a greater sense of wellbeing and relaxation. Green plants such as ferns bring light and beauty indoors without the need for ornate flower arranging! Adding driftwood, shells and rocks can also help to capture a sense of the natural outdoors.
To create a room that promotes a sense of wellbeing and relaxation, consider using colours from the natural world. Painting the room in a pale green or pale blue is said to help promote wellbeing and relaxation as it can suggest thoughts of tranquil forests or spacious sunny skies. You could also include cushions, throws, or rugs that reflect the colours of the natural world.
Take as much advantage as you can of natural daylight in your chosen sanctuary space. Use mirrors to reflect light into darker spaces if needed. Combine this with your new colour scheme and your sanctuary is complete!
Research shows that different fragrances can positively affect our mood. Using scented candles and aromatherapy oils such as lavender, rose and geranium can help to create feelings of calm, tranquillity, and relaxation. Of course, fresh air is equally as important! Opening windows on a regular basis will enable the release of stale air and revitalise you and your sanctuary.
It is important to ensure that the place you have chosen as your sanctuary is free from clutter. A cluttered and disorganised space can cause overwhelm of your senses creating stress and anxiety. Make use of simple storage ideas as much as possible to minimise clutter allowing you to fully relax and unwind.
It is well known that different genres of music affect us in different ways. Compile a mix of your favourite soothing tunes to help you to relax and unwind whenever you retreat to your sanctuary.
A place of sanctuary can become more meaningful if you include photos and mementos that remind you of loved ones. Family photos, handmade gifts or special presents are just some of the things you might like to include.
Taking the time to create your own sanctuary at home is a great way to support your health and wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be a large space, just one that brings together the 7 steps so that you can easily find the peace and tranquillity you deserve!
